The 2000 presidential election was one of the closest and most controversial in history. Afterwards, the media blamed the election fiasco on Florida's butterfly ballots and hanging chads. But the truth is the media shared much of the blame because, by one estimate, the media may have convinced as many as 20,000 Floridians to stay home and not vote.
The Florida Secretary of State sent a press release to media outlets on October 30, 2000 requesting "patience in predicting winners of races" until after all of the polls closed at "8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time." More than 350 polling locations in Florida's panhandle were open until 7 pm Central Time-8pm Eastern Time. The press release stated: "The last thing we need is to have our citizens in the Central Time zone think their vote doesn't count - because it certainly does!"
Despite the Secretary's pleas, this is what the media had to say at 7 pm Eastern Time, an hour before the polls closed.
News anchors from ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN and Fox New Channel repeatedly stating that the Florida polls were closed at 7 pm EST.
In the 2002 off-year elections, 20,000 additional Floridians voted than in the panhandle than in 2000 - unusual given that turn-out in off-year elections is generally much lower. Because the Florida panhandle is strongly Republican, it is possible an additional 20,000 votes may have given George Bush a much larger margin of victory than the one he had - sparing the country of the recount controversy.
This year, the media should know better. Let's see if they get it right.
